Google Developer Day 2011 was a great opportunity to show QAFE to developers and get some instant feedback. We, QAFE team, are true Google Webtoolkit fans and we showed what we did with that technology. Furthermore, we made it really easy to deploy to App Engine (App Engine has some restrictions which might result in serious code refactoring). We took care of the restrictions so that everybody can deploy to App Engine in a matter of seconds!

The developer Day really was not about sales. We got usual feedback and some very good questions.

The QAFE showcase was the QAFE Runtime, the Technology Independent implementation (in this case using Adobe Flex) and the Developer Environment. The Eclipse IDE was extended with the latest QAML Builder Plugin, which not only has a drag-n-drop from the UI but also for the Service Oriented Architecture, integrating with resources. The fact that the this was graphically shown, was a huge surprise for many. QAFE workspace is fully maven based, so having unit tests/selenium or debugging is quite easy. Also, not having compile time, but a simple reload of the applications, was an eye-opener for many visitors to our sandbox location.

In between giving demonstrations, we had some time to visit some of the sessions, which were of excellent quality. See: http://www.google.com/events/developerday/2011/berlin/agenda.html Especially Eric Bidelman’s session with the teasing title “These Aren’t the Sites You’re Looking For: Modern HTML5 Web Apps ” was excellent. Another one was about BigQuery, live demos of the new GoogleTV, HTML5, Android, etc. All about what we make of the web, and we still have a lot to do: for developers next year will be even more interesting!

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community that develops standards to ensure the long-term growth of the Web. For QAFE that means that we propose the QAML, QAFE Markup Language, to be a standard. QAML has the unique feature that it combines technology independent declarative UI with declaratively SOA enabling backend technologies. The SOA enabling part is also in a technology independent way.

We have just uploaded three new demo environments. For…

…QAFE with GWT technology : Click here
…QAFE with Adobe Flex technology : Click here
…QAFE with Adobe AIR technology: Click here

Technology independent
The multiple environments are testament to the fact that with the same QAML files, QAFE allows you to work with different technologies at the same time!

Live code
QAFE’s declarative way of developing is easy. In the menu “QAFE Labs” you find a menu item called “Try Me”. This “Try me” feature allows you to enter QAML code and execute / render it on the fly.

How?
In the “Try me” window there are two menu items: Render and Code.

With “Code” sample QAML code is placed in the text area. With “Render” the QAML code is rendered on the fly – either in GWT or Flex. In case of GWT, a new menu item will appear “Try Me” (in the root menu) and your application can be found there. In case of Flex a new window will appear with the native Flex application.

Tip: If want to make more interesting applications, use code from the QAFE Showcase. Just copy and paste snippets into the textarea (in the correct place) and take it from there.

Note: The “Try me” feature currently can only show the declarative UI part of QAFE. For the declarative enabling SOA part we need to connect to your resources (databases, java), which we restricted in this particular demo environment.

Forms Conversion
For live Forms Conversion from FMB files, we have built in a feature, so that you can give it a try!

How?
In the menu “QAFE Labs” you find a menu item called “Try Me”. See “Live Code” (above) on how to use this feature.

In this “Try me” window, there is an extra tab called Forms Conversion. If you click on this tab, you’ll be able to select an FMB file and when clicking on the Generate button, the FMB is analyzed and translated to QAML. The QAML output will be shown in the Insert Code tab so you can render it directly (see “Live Code” above).

Notes: FMB conversion is just a demo. Of course more is needed for a full conversion. The PLL’s etc. are also needed if being used. Logic is analyzed but obviously not executed (this goes for all the generated applications from the “Try me” feature).

Have fun exploring the demo! And please send us your feedback. Email: info@qafe.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/qafe Telephone: +31 (0)70 319 5000.

It’s been a while since the last post was made. There is a valid reason for it. The focus is now on delivering the software to customers. We plan to release the first official release in June 2009 (so keep track of this feed and additional posts in community sites).
So what are we doing in the meanwhile ? The QAFE Event that was organized on the 2nd of April 2009 was a moment that showed us that companies are really looking forward to these solutions. The attractive part was the declarative UI combined with declaratively connecting your backend. The presentation technologies were updated (now using the latest GWT release (1.6.4) ) and Adobe Flex implementation is going as planned. Also on JSpring the reactions were positive. All the feedback was taken into account and we are processing them to make sure that customers feel satisfied when QAFE is released.

Another interesting topic is the application of Forms Migration. From the feedback we got from our customers, we decided that we are going to introduce a new product in the QAFE Product Suite: QAFE Designer Extension, which will generate QAFE Applications from an Oracle Designer Repository. More on this soon.

So as one can see, we are busy getting the release ready by June 2009. For more information though, feel free to contact us at info@qafe.com
